Olney Theatre Center Institute presents Red Riding Hood: A New Fable
Interns and Theatre Team Up to Bring Children’s Theatre to North Montgomery County

OLNEY, Md. - March 1, 2012 - The Olney Theatre Institute, the education division of Olney Theatre Center, is proud to announce the return of its children’s programming to the Olney Theatre Center campus with Red Riding Hood: A New Fable. This new adaptation, written by Education Associate Michael R. Kelly, runs from March 31 to April 7 and is geared towards engaging the minds of children ages 3 and up.

In Kelly’s adaptation, six year old Millie is just starting first grade and finds it hard to get along with other kids. She finds an escape through the books she reads. Her book smarts seem to distance her from other kids, but one day while writing a presentation on the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” she becomes a part of the story. Imagination and play become her keys to having a truly fun time.

Red Riding Hood: A New Fable is fully produced by the intern class of Olney Theatre Center. These young professionals have come from all over the country for not only an educational experience at a regional theatre center near Washington, DC, but also for professional experience in a creative and encouraging atmosphere. The production has been written, designed, directed, and built by the intern class on their own time outside of regular work calls. They have not only been able to take on leadership roles in their given areas of focus, but also in other areas such as marketing and development.

The Olney Theatre Center Institute Advanced Intern Training Program is a year-long learning opportunity for recent college graduates to gain experience before embarking on their next journey. Former interns have gone on to work in other professional theatres, in the area and beyond, and some have chosen to continue their education by going to graduate school. Over the course of the year, interns are able to gain an understanding of how a professional regional theatre company operates. They are able to work first-hand with directors and designers from around the country on productions that enrich the lives of theatre-goers in the DC area.

The show, directed by Casting Associate Ashleigh Millett, has been cast from a pool of local talent. Baltimore native and Messiah College graduate, Dorea Schmidt, plays Millie, while recent University of Maryland graduate Chelsie Lloyd of Laurel plays Millie’s friend Amy, Millie’s Mother, and Red’s Grandmother. Virginia Tech grad Jared Mason Murray of Fairfax, VA plays Millie’s friend Dewey, Millie’s teacher Mr. Randolph, and the Wolf.

Red Riding Hood: A New Fable is an exciting opportunity for our interns to utilize the practical, hands-on application of the skills they have learned while being essential in producing our main stage season,” Associate Artistic Director Clay Hopper said. “This is a phenomenal class of smart, driven and dedicated interns. They are a testament to how effective the internship program here can be at producing our next generation of theatre artists, producers, and technicians."

All tickets are $10 each and can be purchased through the Olney Theatre Center Box Office at 301.924.3400. This show is sponsored by GrillMarX, Alan Meltzer and the Meltzer Group, Carol Trawick, and Robert Hebda.
