Olney Theatre Center kicks off the day with special guest La Gloria de la Danza, a children’s and adult dance group based in the Wheaton area that performs cultural and folk dances from Central America. La Gloria de la Danza has performed at Montgomery County’s Hispanic Heritage Festival as well as the Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington, DC.

El Olney Theatre Center comienza el día con un invitado especial, La Gloria de la Danza, un grupo de baile para niños y adultos con sede en el área de Wheaton que realiza bailes culturales y folclóricos de América Central. La Gloria de la Danza se ha presentado en el Festival de la Herencia Hispana del Condado de Montgomery, así como en la Embajada de Nicaragua en Washington, DC.

STAGED READING AND DISCUSSION OF ÓYEME, THE BEAUTIFUL / LECTURA Y DISCUSIÓN DE ÓYEME, THE BEAUTIFUL

Laura and Valentina are teenagers just trying to make it through another day in middle school.  But, unlike many of their peers, they are refugees from Central America who have fled brutal violence in their home countries to find shelter and pursue their dreams in the United States. Step inside their shoes, hear their stories, see their struggle, and feel their strength as we move through their day. Óyeme, the beautiful brings to light the undaunted courage and beautiful spirit that fuels these young people and teaches us the power of friendship, family, and hope. Written by Miriam Gonzales and commissioned by Imagination Stage in Bethesda, Óyeme, the beautiful is inspired by the stories of real students living in the Greater Washington, DC area. A discussion will follow the reading with the playwright Miriam Gonzales and Imagination Stage’s Director of Education & Community Programs Joanne Seelig Lamparter.

Laura y Valentina son adolescentes que se enfrentan a otro día en la escuela secundaria. Pero, a diferencia de muchos de sus compañeros, son refugiados de América Central que han huido de la violencia brutal en sus países de origen para buscar refugio y perseguir sus sueños en los Estados Unidos. Join us in a conversation about what it means to find your home and identity through art. Muriel Hasbun is a visual artist and educator who focuses on issues of cultural identity and memory. Beatriz del Omo-Fiddleman is a graphic and book artist born and raised in Mexico City. She currently works as a substitute teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools and spent two years working with ESOL students at Sherwood High School to create illustrated books inspired by their personal stories. Dini McCullough is a Mexican-American lawyer and writer raised in Texas and Montgomery County. In addition to founding the Solana Writer’s Retreat, she's also the founding editor and publisher of Origins Journal, a literary magazine that examines the art of narrative through the lens of identity.  

Únase a nosotros en una conversación sobre lo que significa encontrar su hogar e identidad a través del arte. Muriel Hasbun es una artista visual y educadora que se enfoca en temas de identidad cultural y memoria. Beatriz del Omo-Fiddleman es una artista gráfica y de libros nacida y criada en la Ciudad de México. Actualmente trabaja como maestra sustituta en las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Montgomery y pasó dos años trabajando con estudiantes de ESOL en la Escuela Secundaria Sherwood para crear libros ilustrados inspirados en sus historias personales. Dini McCullough es una abogada y escritora mexicoamericana criada en Texas y el condado de Montgomery. Además de fundar el Solana Writer’s Retreat, también es editora fundadora de Origins Journal, una revista literaria que examina el arte de la narrativa a través del lente de la identidad.

Members of the undocumented community are often the hidden voices missing in our national conversation about immigration, but Olney Theatre Center, in partnership with the nonprofit Casa de Maryland, gives these incredible individuals a platform to share their experiences because no human is illegal, and no one should be afraid to tell their story.

Los miembros de la comunidad indocumentada son a menudo las voces ocultas que faltan en nuestra conversación nacional sobre inmigración, pero Olney Theatre Center, en asociación con la organización sin fines de lucro Casa de Maryland, les brinda a estos increíbles individuos una plataforma para compartir sus experiencias porque ningún humano es ilegal, y ninguno debería tener miedo de contar su historia.

Barquitos de papel / Paper boats: Workshop with Muriel Hasbun

3:00pm-4:00pm in the Actors’ Hall (2nd floor), limited capacity

Artist and educator Muriel Hasbun will lead a family history workshop. Participants are invited to bring copies of documents and family photos to add their stories to the barquitos de papel collective archive. Hasbun has been gathering migration stories from all over the world since 2006 and invites you to contribute a paper boat with your story as well. In the workshop, we are encouraged to remember, to (re)discover and to claim our individual stories, inscribing them in a communal space. Our barquitos stand on their own as documents of our diverse journeys. They highlight our individuality while gesturing that together, we may find our belonging.

La artista y docente Muriel Hasbun facilitará un taller sobre historia de familia. Los participantes están invitados a traer copias de fotografías y documentos de familia para añadir sus historias al archivo colectivo de barquitos de papel. Hasbun ha estado reuniendo historias de familia de todo el mundo desde el 2006 y les invita a contribuir con su barquito también. En el taller, recordamos, (re)descubrimos y reclamamos nuestras historias personales, y las inscribimos en el espacio comunitario. Nuestros barquitos documentan nuestros viajes diversos. Destacan nuestra individualidad al mismo tiempo que nos demuestran que juntos podremos encontrar nuestro sentido de pertenencia.

Cristina Camacho is an educator, filmmaker, choreographer, and dancer who grew up in Montgomery County, MD. She is now a professional dancer based out of New York City. She’s performed internationally with Culture Shock DC, featured on the VMA Awards on TV, and can be seen in the upcoming West Side Story motion picture adaptation by Steven Spielberg. Her new piece Ipseity uses hip-hop and modern dance to explore the relationship between identity, culture, and belonging in a world dictated by boundaries.

Cristina Camacho es una educadora, cineasta, coreógrafa y bailarina que creció en el condado de Montgomery. Ahora es una bailarina profesional con sede en la ciudad de Nueva York. Ha actuado internacionalmente con Culture Shock DC, destacada en los Premios VMA por televisión, y se puede ver en la próxima adaptación cinematográfica de West Side Story de Steven Spielberg. Su nueva pieza, "Ipseity", utiliza hip-hop y danza moderna para explorar la relación entre identidad, cultura y pertenencia en un mundo dictado por límites.

To close out the day, participate in our first ever StorySlam! Prepare a 3-5 minute story about home, whatever that means to you. Moving into a new house. Navigating a new country, missing an old one. Visiting some place that used to be home. What people, food, sights, and memories make you feel at home? Come prepared to listen, support, and share.

Para cerrar el día, participa en nuestro primer StorySlam! Prepare una historia de 3-5 minutos sobre el hogar, lo que sea que eso signifique para usted. Mudarse a una casa nueva. Navegando por un país nuevo, extrañando uno viejo. Visitar algún lugar que fue su hogar. ¿Qué personas, comida, lugares de interés y recuerdos te hacen sentir como en casa?
