Juneteenth Presentation by Rey Smith from Sandy Spring Slave Museum at 5:00 pm followed by a performance from Urban Artistry at 6:00 pm.
About the Presenter: Rey Smith is a graduate of Tuskegee and Howard Universities and have worked as a Secondary History teacher for 35 Years in Dallas, Montgomery County, and DC. I worked on my Masters Degree at the University of Nairobi in Kenya and was the 2007 recipient of the McGraw Hill Prize for leadership work on Global Education. I retired from public education in 2008 and currently serve on the Board at the Sandy Spring Slave Museum. My presentation is entitled "The Real Juneteenth." I grew up in Dallas, Texas and participated in every Juneteenth from the age of 6 to 14. I would like to share what Juneteenth means to me, my family and ancestors, some of whom were enslaved in Texas during and after slavery.
About the Performance: Urban Artistry, Inc., is an internationally recognized 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the performance and preservation of art forms inspired by the urban experience. Serving as cultural ambassadors for communities that are often unsung, the group fulfills its mission through effective collaborations that support artists’ past, present, and future.
