From the Weimar Republic to Now

Prior to the opening night of Cabaret we’ll take a historic overview of the Weimar Republic’s rise and cultural impact on women, LGBTQ+ Berliners, and Jews, as well as its decline, leading to the Nazi seizure of power. We’ll also explore how that narrative resonates today with Georgetown Professor Katrin Sieg and Dr. Jake Newsome of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Professor Katrin Sieg is Director of the BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University, and author of three books on German theater and European culture.

Dr. Jake Newsome is a scholar of American and German LGBTQ history. His research focuses on human rights and the postwar treatment of the Nazis’ gay and lesbian victims. His current book project is Pink Triangle Legacies: Holocaust Memory and Modern Gay Identity. He now works as the Manager of College Student Leadership Programs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
