The annual swing concert is Olney Big Band's largest fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from this performance help to support all areas of their organization from entertaining retired and assisted-living residents at senior communities to performing dances at local high schools, and other community programs that inspire young musicians and audiences.
On October 27th at 1:30 pm, the Olney Big Band will present its 10th celebration of the golden age of big bands, highlighting such greats as Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Les Brown, and Duke Ellington.
When the Theatre contacted the band in 2009 to ask whether it could fill an unbooked date, former director Dr. Rip Rice used Benny Goodman’s 100th birthday as the inspiration for Swing! Swing! Swing! X. In addition to Goodman standard, the band tipped their hats to Cab Calloway, Harry James, Count Basie, and Glenn Miller. That performance was the first of what would become an annual event.
The 10th anniversary concert will present some of the glorious songs and fabulous musicianship from the Big Band Era, as well as vocals by Matt “Sinatra” Williams and special returning guest crooner Brad Bawek.
For groups of 15 or more, contact Weldon C. Brown for special group rates at 301-924-4485, ext. 121 or at wbrown@olneytheatre.org
